Historic woman’s club is now in danger

THE BALLROOM of the Woman’s Club undergoes renovations.
The Woman’s Club of Hollywood was founded in 1905 by a group of 14 women who wanted to start the first library in Hollywood. This library is now located at 1623 Ivar Ave. Since then, members of the Woman’s Club have worked to shape the community and inspire young girls. The club, with its house located at 1749 La Brea Ave., has formed the bedrock of renowned institutions.
The women who volunteered their time helped raise funds to build the Hollywood Bowl in 1921 and organized many of its early performances. Members also supported the first Hollywood Studio Club in 1916, creating a dedicated residential club for young women in the film industry.
Despite the work these women have done to support Hollywood and the greater Los Angeles area, their legacy is now under attack. Several years ago, club leaders, were taken advantage of in a fraudulent loan, putting the club in immense debt.
“We raised funds for buildings that still exist. They wouldn’t be there without us,” club President Rosemary Lord said. “But we never got any recognition.”
Many are still unaware of these women’s contributions. Not only has their impact been largely overlooked, but their altruism has also been exploited by a predatory loan. Now, the clubhouse faces a foreclosure auction scheduled for Sun., Aug. 30.
