Turning 100 in style … car-free
Pedal, scoot, walk or hop on the Metro when CicLAvia comes to town, taking over eight miles of city streets in a carnival-style party, car-free, Sun., Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“Celebrate LA! LA Phil 100 x CicLAvia” will take Angelenos on a lengthy route from Walt Disney Concert Hall to the Hollywood Bowl.
The event will coincide with the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 100th anniversary and will culminate with a free concert at the Bowl.
Superstar Katy Perry will join conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl at 7 p.m. Other guests include Herbie Hancock, Kali Uchis and Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA).
But before the big show, some 1,800 performers, musicians, dancers and artists will perform along the route. Five hubs — near the Hollywood Bowl, Melrose Avenue near Larchmont Boulevard, Koreatown at Normandie Avenue, MacArthur Park and Grand Avenue — will include food trucks, live music and kid-friendly activities.
“There are officially six hubs, but only five of them are on the open street route; the sixth is at the Hollywood Bowl, which is accessible via free shuttle from the Hollywood Hub between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.,” CicLAvia executive director Romel Pascual told the Chronicle.
Participants can join the festivities anywhere along the route — there is no starting or ending point. The route travels from Walt Disney Concert Hall at Grand, follows Wilshire Boulevard to Western Avenue, heads north to Melrose, then west to Vine Street and up to Yucca Street near the Bowl.
Street closures will be at Grand between 1st Street and Wilshire; Wilshire between Grand and Western Ave.; Western between Wilshire and Melrose; Melrose between Western and Vine St. and Vine between Melrose and the Hollywood hub at Yucca.
There will be no closure of Highland Avenue. Shuttles between the Hollywood hub and the Hollywood Bowl will run at regular intervals throughout the day.
