It was time to go to Washington D.C. as a kid reporter for KidScoop Media, and I was so excited, I wanted to scream. We arrived at the White House on July 10 for the Kids State Dinner. We were given a tour of the White House Briefing Room, and I got to stand at the podium where the President stands.

We entered the front doors of the White House and there was a military band playing. The East Room of the White House was very colorful. The table settings were made out of red and yellow grape tomatoes, brussles sprouts and radishes.

We stood in the press area and watched as the winners of Michelle Obama’s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge and their parents were seated at long tables. The event began with First Lady Michelle Obama speaking to us about how happy she was to host this event and have so many talented young chefs there.

She taught us that food is fuel and breakfast is the most important meal of the day. She introduced President Obama and the room exploded with excitement. I was really shocked to see the President standing so close to me. He told us his favorite veggie is broccoli, and he encouraged us to eat healthy foods. He congratulated all of the winners, went around the room meeting each kid, and then he had to get back to work. He didn’t even get to stay and eat.

I interviewed some of the winners, including Mikaila Ulmer, the owner of BeeSweet Lemonade.
