ALL THAT REMAINED on the Sunday morning following the fire.

A fire of unknown origin broke out at a tent encampment on Third Street last Saturday night, May 29. The blaze was on the southeast corner of Detroit St. at 5724 W. Third St. The four-story office building involved is adjacent to the CVS Pharmacy on the southwest corner of La Brea Ave., and the building is cater-corner to the elementary and middle school Yeshiva Aharon Yaakov / Ohr Eliyahu on the northwest corner of Third and Detroit.

Due to the rapid response by City of Los Angeles firefighters, no other buildings were involved in the fire. The only apparent damage was to the tent, or tents, and the contents thereof, as well as to the exterior walls of the office building.

In a timely alert from the office of Councilmember Nithya Raman, specifically an e-mail message from Deputy Chief of Staff and District Director Andrea Conant, neighbors were notified at 11:16 p.m. of the fire. Explained Conant: “[W]e are aware there was an encampment fire this evening at 3rd and Detroit Street. I visited the site personally to assess the situation first-hand. LAFD Station 29 [in Windsor Square] ended up taking the call since Station 61 was out on another incident.”

In response to the Council Office’s immediate request to LA Sanitation, a crew was at the site cleaning up mid-day Sunday. According to a scavenger with a white van who was doing his own clean-up earlier Sunday morning, the other nearby tent — still abutting the building — was abandoned and could also be a fire hazard.

Conant continued in her late night message: “We have had our LA Conservation Corps clean team visit this site weekly to provide sanitation services, and we will continue to monitor and prioritize the direction of resources to this location.”
