Third Street Elementary gets 100% participation for Walkathon
Third Street Elementary School was full of 100s surrounding its Walkathon. Hundreds showed up for the one-day event. There was 100% schoolwide participation, and more than $100,000 was raised. The event was organized by Friends of Third, the school’s nonprofit parent booster group.

Three weeks of fundraising culminated in a fun-filled day April 23 where students walked and played around the yard on campus. There was music, food, and lots of schoo spirit. Each child was treated to a scoop of ice cream from Salt & Straw and goodie bags donated from JapanLA. Parent volunteers were fueled by Verve Coffee Roasters and Andre’s Italian Restaurant.

To fundraise, students reached out to family, friends, and neighbors for sponsorship and donations. New this year, FOT recognized students’ who were especially creative with their fundraising. Four winners received an Entrepreneurship Award. Their fundraising efforts included organizing a lemonade stand, planning a family dining night at Burger Lounge, selling cooling towels at baseball games, and peddling handmade tie-dye socks. FOT also reaches out to corportations for matching to increase their bottom line.

FOT uses the funds to help enrich the school’s programming, including physical education, science, art, and music.
