Queen of Pop—Madonna releases second round of ‘Confessions’

Madonna has been in the white-hot spotlight for nearly 44 years, beginning with her first single, “Everybody,” which was released without an album deal, but rather a contract for three 12-inch dance singles. Fortunately, she also had an option for an album deal, depending on how well the singles performed. “Everybody” was released in October 1982, and “Burning Up,” backed with “Physical Attraction,” were released as a double-sided single in March 1983. To say that radio airplay was scarce would be an understatement, but these singles found their way onto the dance floor in clubs across America and around the world. “Everybody” barely made a dent on the Billboard Hot 100 and bubbled under seven notches to peak at No. 107. However, it peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Dance Chart, as did the following double A-side single. That was good enough for Seymour Stein, who was president of Sire Records, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Records. Madonna then continued co-writing enough songs to complete an album.

Her self-titled debut album entered the Billboard 200 album chart in September 1983 at No. 190, six weeks following its release. The album was well received by the majority of critics, including Billboard and Rolling Stone, and eventually peaked at No. 8 in October 1984, selling just under three million copies in that time frame. (It has since been certified five times platinum, selling five million copies in the U.S. alone.) The entire album was a dance-oriented project, which wasn’t getting much support from radio. However, clubs couldn’t resist her unique brand of music and vocals. When the third single, “Holiday,” was released, it finally captured the attention of DJs and radio programmers. It became Madonna’s first solid hit, peaking at No. 16 on the Hot 100 chart. It went all the way to No. 1 on the dance chart to become her first of 50 chart-toppers between 1983-2000—the most for any artist in chart history.

The 67-year-old icon is also recognized as the best-selling female recording artist of all time, with total worldwide record sales estimated between 400 million and 450 million (including albums, singles, and digital tracks). Her career, spanning more than four decades, includes more than 87 million albums sold in the United States alone. She is fourth in line in worldwide sales, following The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Michael Jackson.

Madonna immediately became a phenomenon, with teenage girls dressing in her unique style of shabby chic. Since that time, Madonna has reinvented herself almost as many times as the wheel!

Forty-three years later, Madonna is set to release her 15th studio album—21 years after releasing her critically acclaimed 10th studio album, “Confessions on a Dance Floor.” The Queen of Pop is ready to return to the type of music that put her on the musical map and charts with “Confessions on a Dance Floor – Part II.”

On April 15, Madonna made the announcement of the album and released the image of the album cover simultaneously. Two days later she made a surprise appearance at Coachella, joining headliner Sabrina Carpenter onstage for a three-song set. It’s been 20 years since Madonna played the music festival, and she referred to it as a “full-circle moment.” As soon as Madonna’s iconic 1990 single “Vogue” began to play, the crowd went wild. She then appeared, rising up to the floor (in a vintage lilac corset and Gucci jacket) to join Carpenter with an all-out performance of the set. The duo segued from “Vogue” to “Like A Prayer,” and then Madonna premiered a track from her new album, “Bring Your Love.”

The album is Madonna’s first release in seven years and is expected to become her 10th No. 1. The first single, “I Feel So Free,” debuted with roughly 584,000 streams on Spotify on its first partial day of release. By its second day it had accumulated over 1 million total streams. Barely one week after its release, it had gone to No. 1 in over 30 countries on iTunes.

For the album, Madonna reunited with Stuart Price, the man who produced the first “Confessions” set in 2005. Like its predecessor, the album is designed as a non-stop club mix, with no gaps between tracks. The sound is described as deep house and trance-inspired, focusing on “ritualistic” dance floor themes and a “trance-like state” production.

Other key tracks and singles include “One Step Away,” where Madonna explores the idea of the dance floor as a “threshold.” “Forgive Yourself” and “Fragile” are reported to address her once close but turbulent relationship with her late brother, Christopher Ciccone, who sadly passed away in 2024 at the age of 63.

“Confessions on a Dance Floor – Part II” (also known as “Confessions II”), is available for pre-order now and is scheduled for release July 3. The standard edition is a 12-track set and will be available on vinyl, CD, and cassette. There will also be a Deluxe Edition with 16 tracks on a two-LP set and CD. If that’s not enough, there will be an Indie Edition, which will be pressed on white vinyl with an alternate cover. For the die-hard fans, there will be a Collector’s Bundle, which consists of all formats.

If you’re a Madonna fan, this new album will most certainly put you back into the groove.
