Martinez, of Fire Station 61, was among honorees

CEREMONY HONORED fallen firefighters.
Fallen firefighters from SoCal were honored last month at Capitol Park in Sacramento.
Capt. Mark A. Martinez, who served at Station 61, at 5821 W. Third St., was among the 37 firefighters honored at the event, which took place Oct. 3 on California Firefighters Memorial Day.
Martinez, who died of cancer in 2021, joins the names of 1,593 other firefighters honored since California became a state in 1850. Post-traumatic stress injury and cancer are leading causes of death for firefighters.
The ceremony marked the advance of Phase 2 of the Memorial Wall Expansion Project, expected to conclude in 2027. It will add space for approximately 4,600 new names of fallen firefighters over the next 150 years in the future.
Nearly 1,000 firefighters, families, and supporters gathered to pay tribute at the annual event hosted by the California Fire Foundation. Ceremonial flyovers, a Scottish pipes and drums band, and fire crews from across the state marked the occasion. California Attorney General Rob Bonta was among speakers.
