La Brea-Hancock urges added security for Avalon Bay park

Recent drug arrests in a park behind Avalon Bay apartments at 5115 Wilshire Blvd. has La Brea-Hancock residents concerned. The space has become a site for criminal activity and homeless occupants.

The park is owned by Avalon Bay.

When it opened its multi-story apartment building in 2007, the developer promised to help provide security for the park.

William Funderburk Jr., who represents the area on the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council board, said “our leadership is working very hard to hammer out a mitigation agreement to maintain safe greenspace.” Funderburk added security measures are insufficient, and he knows of only two video cameras for the park.

The La Brea-Hancock neighborhood watch program recently was revitalized by co-chairs Debora Vrana and Felicia Funderburk to step up communication among neighbors.
