First American Pope chosen by the Cardinals
Cardinal Robert Prevost, from Chicago, has been chosen as the new Pope. He has chosen the name Leo XIV. This marks the first time that an American has been elected Pope, although he has spent decades working as a missionary in Peru and other countries. Within the Catholic Church, he is considered a reformer, who will look to continue the work that Pope Francis started.
The conclave, the meeting of Cardinals to elect the Pope lasted only 2 days, which might signify a unity around the new Pope.
