UNIQUE EATS and Eateries of Los Angeles.
By Nona Sue Friedman
Looking for some unusual or iconic restaurants to visit in Los Angeles? Tired of your usual places? Visitors coming in for the holidays? Author Danny Jensen has scoured the metropolis and reviewed more than 75 places to pique your interest—and your tastebuds. Jensen’s book, “Unique Eats and Eateries of Los Angeles,” describes a multitude of different foods, coupled with history or interesting backstory about each location.
Nearby eateries include Canter’s Deli, which opened its second location on Fairfax Avenue in 1948 after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that restrictive housing rules were unconstitutional; The Original Farmer’s Market, whose original 256 acres were home to a dairy farm before the owner’s struck oil on the land; and Pink’s Hot Dogs which started selling their signature dogs from a pushcart in 1939.
Farther afield, try 27th Street Bakery, at 2700 S. Central Ave., which has been baking sweet potato and pecan pies in the same oven for 70 years. Currently, the granddaughter, who was an Olympic gold medalist in track in 1984, is running the shop. There’s also Flavors from Afar, at 5652 Hollywood Blvd., that not only creates an ever-changing menu of Pan-African food, but is also a women- and refuge-led business that provides employment, training, and business skills to immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees.
The book is available online and in bookstores.
