Big Sunday grows from a single day to a month

Starting May 1, Big Sunday will launch a month-long campaign to bring volunteers together with projects and organizations in need of support. But they need your help.
You can volunteer to help clean up a neighborhood, collect and sort sports equipment or work with homeless youth. Whatever your interests or skills, there are fun, free events beginning Thurs., May 1.
“After 17 years, we’ve simply grown too big to contain everything in one weekend,” said Big Sunday founder David Levinson. According to Levinson, his organization will host and/or sponsor a special event every single day of the month.
“We are so excited about this,” said Levinson, adding, “Now we can take on even bigger projects, reach more people, make new alliances, and more easily fit in with everyone’s busy schedules.”
Humble beginnings
The charity was started in 1999 when Levinson, a Hancock Park resident, put together a short list of community fix-up projects that could be easily tackled in a day. About 300 people from his synagogue, Temple Israel of Hollywood, volunteered that first year, paving the way for it to become a community-building initiative engaging tens of thousands of volunteers from all walks of life.
Celebrating its 18th year, Big Sunday has grown from a single-day event to a weekend every May and, now, to an entire month of community activities.
Find a project
To get involved, start by finding a project that appeals to you online at bigsunday.org/mobs. You can search by project name, areas of interest, keyword or zip code. Once you find a project, click on the title to open a description and fill out the registration form. It’s that simple. Big Sunday projects are staffed by volunteers, and there is no charge to participate.
