A group of students at Larchmont Charter School’s Hollygrove campus — 815 N. El Centro Ave. — is learning at an early age the benefits and responsibilities of a free press, with the launch of a new school newspaper, LCS Roots.

“We published our first edition in March with seven students. But since then, we have added more student writers and a cartoonist,” says Allison Pratt, a fourth-grade teacher at Larchmont Charter who also serves as an advisor for LCS Roots.

With each new assignment, students learn skills such as analytical thinking, clear writing and sensitivity to deadlines; and according to Pratt they are doing a “great job” of meeting deadlines, among other things.

“Most students type their articles on Google Docs and share it with me, so we are able to collaborate and edit it together before the deadline.”

Pratt says the project is generating a lot of buzz on campus, with Larchmont Charter students getting “very excited about each issue. “The students enjoy reading what their peers have to say,” she explains.

In an attempt to keep readers coming back each month, Pratt says the student’s endeavor to include in the newspaper something that’s interesting or fun for all the grades: “In our last edition we had an Earth Day word search, which was a big hit,” she concludes.
